Are you attached to your stuff?

By that I mean do you live for the belongings you have in your life?

In our consumer-driven society we can be side-tracked by all of the things we buy. Yes, it is a hard statement for some people to read. But I believe it is true. I believe that we ‘ordinary’ folks have been influenced by the stars and starlets of Hollywood and how they spend their money. It appears that we believe that if we buy what they’ve bought we will have the life that they have. There are a number of challenges with that thought;

  1. You will never have their life because it is their life.
  2. Why would you think they are truly happy just because they have all those ‘toys’ or ‘trinkets’?

Recently I’ve been made aware of the levels of happiness, they are from the lowest to the highest;

    • pleasure (from external things)
    • success (from achievement, status or popularity)
    • contributing beyond one’s self (to make a difference)
    • transcendence (our purpose beyond the world)

As you can see pleasure from external things is the lowest form of happiness. In other words, just because you can buy something it does not bring you a high level of happiness.

To conclude I want to ask you a question; what can you do today to have a higher level of happiness?
