Have you noticed how inflammatory some words are?

Do they have an impact on the way you view a situation?

The other day my spouse came back from shopping. She brought in a small flyer than had been put on the car window. The word that this group wanted to emphasize was the word ‘Exploiting’, as in exploiting the workers. In the flyer it stated that one of the ways that this organization makes its profit is by keeping wages down. This is so true I almost laughed. While I don’t agree with any form of slave labor I believe that one of the responsibilities of every worker is to live within their paycheck. If they aren’t doing that, whose fault is it that they don’t have enough money at the end of the month? And really that is what most labor strife is all about in North America. I say that because in North America every person has the ability to leave their employment if they are not happy.

Sadly, many employees stay employed, but have checked out. They are not engaged. When people are not engaged it means that they have quit working but still collect their monthly pay. To me this is truly exploitation.

What has to happen?

I believe it starts with the hiring process. You need to hire people that have good character. Secondly, as an employer you need to implement a methodology that measures results of every employee. Thirdly, continuous improvement in every area of business and with every employee is essential. Remember if you continue to do what you’ve always done, you will continue to get what you’ve always gotten.

What can you do today that will improve your organization?
