What do you stand for?

What is really important in your life or your organization?

Almost 2 months ago we had the so appropriately called ‘Black Friday’. I say that not because when businesses are in the black everyone is happy, but ‘black’ because it shows how delusional we’ve become as people. I just can’t imagine sitting in front of a store for any time waiting for it to open to get a good deal on whatever. Yes, I know that all businesses need to be profitable otherwise they fail, but many of the businesses that take part in this may not be following what they truly stand for, or what is important to them and their staff.

There is a light that is shining though.

Outdoor products and apparel retailer Recreational Equipment, Inc. (commonly known as REI) closed all of its 143 stores on Black Friday, so that their employees could get outside. Makes sense to me doesn’t it? I understand it because one of my younger brothers works for a company that sells outdoor products and apparel. When I say he works in this business I need to correct my comments. He is employed by them and enjoys his work so much that when I speak to him it appears that when he goes into work it is like he is going to have fun, as he is an avid outdoors person and enjoys talking to others about all the products and apparel they sell.

To conclude I am going to ask you one question;

Are the decisions your organization makes in-line with what is most important for the organization and the employees?
