Do you hire by skill or by character?

This is the first question you need to answer before you start an interview, isn’t it?

I write that because of a quote by Peter Drucker. He stated; “Most of what we call management consists of making it difficult for people to get their work done.” That is a pretty harsh statement, isn’t it?

In a recent discussion with a business owner he stated that most staff people are replaced or fired because of their character. I agreed with him. Then he stated that the problem was that most businesses hire by skill and ignore the person character, which leads to the problems at work.

So when you look back at Mr. Drucker’s quote he is not wrong. Management can be trying to fix their hiring practices by interfering with the staff member as they are now seeing the character of the person they hired. That is why hiring staff without analyzing whether the person’s character fits with the company values and those that they will be working with is so important.

What can you do today to hire people with character and then improve their skills?
