Do you like the silence?

Are you comfortable without any disturbances?

I ask those questions due to a recent study published in ‘Science’ (July 3rd 2014). The research stated that people hate being left alone with their thoughts. Men in particular would sooner be in pain than to be alone with their thoughts.

The researchers found that about a 25% of women and 33% of men chose electric shocks over being silent with their thoughts. This is very disconcerting for me. When I say it is disconcerting to me, I mean alarming. I state that because I have found over the past 18 months that ‘the classroom of silence’ has taught me so many things. The silence has given me insight as to action I should take as well as ways to handle the challenges in my life.

I have a question for you; which is a better alternative; improving your life or enduring electric shocks?

If you’ve read this entire blog, improving your life is a better alternative, isn’t it?

  1. Those results show why aimless web surfing, social media and reality tv are so popular. They are like soporific drugs, removing the need to think.

I am very comfortable with silence, particularly if it’s on the back of a horse enjoying nature.

It took time to become a habit, but now I meditate for 10 minutes every morning in complete silence.
