Have You Ever Been Suspended in Time?
You are probably asking what do you mean by ‘suspended in time’?
You may find other definitions although for me ‘suspended in time’ is being held captive by someone while they think about making a decision, or you making a commitment to take some action.
Or another way of looking at this is you are being held captive by indecision about making a decision, or making a commitment to take some action. Yes, I know that most people would say; ‘That’s procrastination!’ I won’t argue with that, although I think my wording really tells the whole story of what is taking place.
Ladies and gentlemen, we all need to develop a great deal more resilience in dealing with this issue. I state that very sincerely because time is all that we have and if we continue to waste this precious time one second at a time, we lose opportunity. That is the opportunity to;
- pursue goals,
- build relationships, and
- become a better person.
While I’ve outlined 3 areas that being ‘suspended in time’ affects, it has also occurred to me that many people get ‘suspended in time’ because of a number of personal beliefs or traits, such as;
- Anxiety or fear
- Feeling overwhelmed about the amount of work to be done
- Being a perfectionist
- Low motivation
- Content to keep doing what you’re already doing
- Working on goals that aren’t clearly defined
- Failure to prioritize tasks
- Preferring to accepting feeling better now (even though you know you will feel regretful later)
- Assuming that a task is going to be frustrating, boring, or unpleasant
- Being irrationally pessimistic about the odds of achievement
- Knowing that the effort needed will be a challenge to your usual actions.
- Defying a boss or authority (because it feels good)
- Experiencing low energy
- Working in an environment filled with distractions or confrontations
- Waiting for a better opportunity
When you get down to being honest with yourself, every one of these is an excuse for not taking action and getting some sort of a result. A question; how is that good for you in the long-term?
Over the 30 plus years I’ve been working with people, I’ve noticed that many people live a life of blaming others, making excuses, or denying that they had anything to do with __. Another question; is that a good way to live a life that you can be pleased about?
As I stated earlier, we all need to become a lot more resilient. In order to become more resilient, you have to subdue that inner voice that is leading you down the path of ruin. Consider these quotations;
“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it.” – Warren Buffett
“Ignorance and inconsideration are the two great causes of the ruin of mankind.” – John Tillotson
“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.” – Mother Teresa
“You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.” – Zig Ziglar
I hope that you will consider the above the next time you are ‘suspended in time’.
