Why do some people see asking for help as discouraging – part 1

I have always been intrigued by people. In fact, my spouse Debbie gets very concerned that when I go with her to shop for groceries. It is because I am more interested in viewing people than her purpose of the trip to the grocery store.

What she doesn’t understand is that I do have a purpose, it is to admire people. That is to appreciate and enjoy their actions while they are shopping.

Over the next 4 days I am going to address the reasons why some people see asking for help as discouraging. After many years in working with people I’ve seen this in full display. Yes, I will tackle why they do it and also why it might be a good idea to look differently at this issue. When I say that it might be a good idea to look differently at this issue, I can see how having some resilience to giving into our habits is a big concern for many of us. Yes, we are creatures of habit, but sometimes those habits are not serving us favorably.

The first reason why some people believe asking for help as discouraging is that they see it as a professional weakness.

Yes, we have been brought up to think that we know everything, and can do anything. When you really think about it, isn’t that an odd way to go through life? We are called Homo Sapiens which means thinking human, and as humans we are social beings, that means we connect with others who can help us face the challenges and enjoy the good times. I know from the comments I’ve got that it is the way I ask questions that helps them look at their issues in a different light, thus they come up with new and better solutions. So, tell me how is it a professional weakness to ask for help?

Now don’t just take my word on why it is important that we never become afraid to ask for help. What about this quote by an American motivational speaker, author, former radio DJ, and former television host? Les Brown stated; “Ask for help not because you’re weak, but because you want to remain strong.”
