Why do you work?
I know some people would say ‘I got bills to pay’. My question becomes is that the only reason?
I think that North American’s as a culture are in for some very bad times. This is not because of who is elected or what taxes are being dumped on us. I think that the bad times are going to be self-imposed. I say that because on an average many of us have gone soft. By soft I am saying that we only do what is necessary. That is to ‘keep our bosses off our case’ or ‘to keep the wolf away from the door’. In other words we are not engaged enough in our work. When we work this way it appears to me that we are only working for the money. I think you’d admit that this is not the way to live. In fact I know that this type of work activity only leads to more stress.
What is the solution?
I believe the solution needs to come from each individual worker, no matter where they work. I believe that each individual worker must create an objective for why they get up and go to work. This objective must come from the heart. It must have more meaning than money. By that I mean it must be the end result of why you are earning money. For example; is it to support your family because you love them? Or is it to save money for a special trip? Or is it to add an addition to your home as a sign of love for your family so two of your children do not have to live in the same bed-room? These are just ideas, and I am sure you can come up with a very personal objective that will change the way you look at your work.
Isn’t this the way to increase your focus and pleasure at work?
