Complacency is a deadly disease in business isn’t it?

Have you ever thought about how much the impact is?

I recently read an article in The Economic Times that quoted Tom Dumez, vice-president (HR) of Kent Records. He stated that “46% of employees are either reactively or actively disengaged, have misguided loyalty, or are actually there mostly to negatively impact your business?”

While 46% is still not a majority of employees, it is frightening never-the-less. While I’m not sure if there are particular reasons for complacency. It is important to help you understand what complacency is. Complacency can be defined as a sense of ease joined with a lack of interest in addressing key issues or areas in an organization that need improvement and growth.

Here are some of the ways to detect complacency with your employees;

  • They’ve stopped thinking, therefore ask less questions.
  • They’re less collaborative with fellow employees.
  • If they’ve been leaders, they take on less leadership activities.
  • They are less interested in upgrading their skills.
  • They are less thorough or detailed in their approach to projects.
  • They’ve lost their passion and thus they will take less risks.

So what can you do to move your employees away from this complacency model?

Have you ever thought of creating a culture of respectful accountability?

What about creating more opportunity for people to say ‘yes’ more often?

Can you imagine what firmer and tighter deadlines would do for their motivation?
