Are all the details important?

In fact, do you need to know all the details?

Recently I was intrigued by the following quote by Thomas Merton. He wrote; “You do not need to know precisely what is happening, or exactly where it is all going. What you need is to recognize the possibilities and challenges offered by the present moment, and to embrace them with courage, faith and hope.”

Why was I fascinated by this?

It was due to the second line. It is all about embracing the present moment and recognizing the possibilities and challenges. There have been times in my life where I’ve wanted to know everything and be prepared for everything. Now with hind-sight I am coming to realize that this wanting to know everything and be prepared for everything was such as waste of energy. It was if I would not be all that I could be unless I was prepared and all knowing.

Now let me turn this around.

What if you and I counted on our inner resources to go with the flow?

What if you and I depended on our courage, faith and hope that no matter the circumstance things would work out?

Doesn’t this make sense?
