If stress is a normal psychological event, why does it bother us so much?
Is it because we don’t understand how to handle it?
Numerous surveys show that most North Americans experience stress and the challenges that go with stress many times during a year. So if this is such a common occurrence why is it that we are always looking for an escape from the stressful situations in our lives?
I believe we must first understand that the way our body was created is wonderful. I say that because we have an in-born alarm system for our own protection. Can you imagine what life would be like without this alarm system? Without it when there was a threat to our life or limb we would proceed without due care or attention into very perilous or unsafe situations.
The amazing thing about us humans is that we have taken this in-born alarm system to a new level and it is causing us nothing but harm. This new level is all about being stressed out when we don’t get what we want. We revert back to our child-hood ways and appear to stomp our feet because we have been ‘wronged’.
This is why stress management is crucial for our long-term emotional and social well-being. Just because you didn’t get what you wanted, does not mean that your life is about to come to an end, does it? Don’t you think that this is the time to re-consider your thoughts about the situation and see the benefits that this unfortunate incident can bring to your life?
Doesn’t this make more sense that getting upset about something you had no control over in the first place?
